Liver Transplantation

liver transplantation

Your liver is a crucial internal organ, performing critical functions including:

  • Removing toxins and sources of infection from your blood
  • Regulating your immune response
  • Preventing infection
  • Helping your body absorb fats and cholesterol and distributing it to the other parts of the body
  • Processing nutrients and medications

When a person goes into liver failure, either suddenly (acute liver failure) or slowly over years (chronic liver failure), these critical functions deteriorate to the point that liver transplantation becomes necessary. A liver transplant is a surgical procedure that removes the non-functioning liver and replaces it with a healthy liver from a donor.

Donor Livers: Our Approach

The process of evaluation, listing for transplant, transplant surgery, and then long-term post-transplant care can be very daunting. At SCLC, our goal is to be an advocate for our liver patients through the entire process and provide long-term continuity of care.

Our entire team is highly experienced in liver transplantation and provide quality care focused on your needs. Dr. Hassanein served as the Medical Directors for Transplant Hepatology at prestigious universities across the nation, and through his care, patients are given the HALO tools to understand this complex process.

Donor livers come from either deceased people or from living donors. Living donor transplants are possible because the liver regenerates itself, and will grow to a near normal-sized liver after transplantation.
